Matching Dress and Dog Collar
Every summer, like clockwork, I make a dress
Once it get warm, I set down the knitting needles and start looking at fabrics. Sometimes it’s for a wedding. Or some kind of other special event. But this year, I just wanted to match my dog.
It starts as it usually does - a very thorough run through of Etsy and all the patterns it has to offer. I was looking for something classic yet comfortable. Something preferably without zippers because honestly I just wanted to be able to make it and wear it within a day (zippers always add on at least three hours of troubleshooting for me). And alas, I found the perfect dress pattern.
It hit all the marks.
The pattern only required cutting two pieces and a long strip of bias tape. I picked out fabric and findings in my favorite combo, pink and red (is it Valentines or is it Glossier?) and set off to create my dress of the year. In the end, it was very simple. So simple in fact, I was able to make another dress in another color way.
Now reggie needs one
Reginald is my tri-color corgi. For three years, he’s never complained about a hat, sweater, or doo-dad I’ve made for him. He will never try to take it off himself, never shakes it off. He just…goes about his day with anything I make him. But I should say, I don’t like making things that constricts his movement. Even when I make sweaters for Reggie, I usually take it off after a few minutes - never longer than half an hour.
All this to say, I couldn’t make him a dress.
So I made him a peter-pan collar. I used the same bias tape and fabric from the dress and used a scaled-down version of a free pattern I found online. It was simple enough, although I kept overestimating how large the collar should be. I still think I could have scaled it down more, but at that point I ran out of fabric.
In the end, this became one of my favorite projects to date.
